Designers Face Behind the Cards

Yes, it’s time for another Face Behind the Cards and this time in the hot seat it’s Jess Moorhouse!

Introducing Jess; Yorkshire based illustrator and card-making whizz! When she’s not doodling away on her Ipad, you’ll usually find Jess knocking back coffee like it’s going out of fashion, running around on a netball court or on an adventure up a mountain somewhere with her rescue pup Duke – see very cute image above!

Over to you Jess…

How did you get into making cards? Was it something you always wanted to do?

No actually, it all happened by chance! My first job after finishing university was designing wedding stationery for this really outdated company. After less than a year I was DYING to leave and even thought about moving to London! One day, I randomly got a call from a recruitment agency, asking if I wanted to interview at a leading card company… I got offered the job the same day, woop! I ended up stayed there for over 7 years before going freelance.

Wow, and the rest is history! What would you say inspires your work?

All sorts! I try to avoid sites like Pinterest these days as it’s so over-saturated with the same things over and over. My favourite thing is going out on day trips and taking in my surroundings. It sounds dead creepy but I love people watching too – I base a lot of my designs on silly things my friends or strangers have done/said!

Not creepy at all, Jess! Did being in Lockdown over the past 18 months change the way you worked at all?

Yes! I got so comfortable in my own space and being able to sleep in that little bit longer rather than commuting to an office – It’s one of the many reasons I quit my job and went freelance!!

Sounds like you really made the best of a bad situation! If you had to pick, what’s your favourite card you’ve made and why?

I love anything willy based. I have the humour of a 12-year-old and I’m basically the guy off Superbad that has a cock drawing problem. My friends find it hilarious that I make money drawing dicks.

It’s a great industy we’re in, Jess. What was your favourite thing about this summer?

Me, my partner and our doggo went camping a few times! We found the most magical spot in the Lake District which is now our go to place when we need a break!

Sounds dreamy! Can you give us a hint as to what you’re working on at the moment?

Oh gosh, I have such a mix of things on at the moment! I don’t solely design cards as a job, so I’m currently juggling illustrating books, kids clothing, branding, patterns for fabric, as well as working on a Christmas range of products for my Etsy.

Sounds like you’re a woman of many talents! If you weren’t designing cards (amongst other creative pursuits) what would you like to be doing instead?

Bit of a strange one but I would absolutely LOVE to do something along the lines of forensics. I’m true crime obsessed and always had a love for human anatomy. I tried to take biology as an A-Level alongside my art subjects but I wasn’t allowed as it was too random (boooooo, hisss!).

We’re sure you would have made a great crime scene investigator in another life! Last but not least, tell us one fun fact about yourself.

I once got into a bidding war at a televised auction to win Tommy Ball’s 3 headed duck taxidermy – I lost 🙁

You know what, we won’t ask… And on that note, we’d like to thank Jess for taking the time to chat with us! You can find all her brilliant cards right here, as well as a small collection now available to buy in Scribbler stores.
